6 Things You Should Not Do During A Divorce

Divorce is complicated enough and can take a huge financial and emotional toll on its own. Often any mistakes you make during this time can have painful ramifications in the future. Here is a list of 6 things you should not do during a divorce.

1. Do Not Use Your Children as Pawns

Most parents understand how divorce can negatively impact their children. Many however still use them as an avenue to get back at their spouse, intentionally or unintentionally. Be very mindful of how you speak to your children about your spouse and what role you play in their relationship with their other parent.

2. Do Not Rush into New Romantic Relationships

Spouses dating during the divorce process is one of the most common conflict points; and it can impact court rulings. It is nearly certain that it will anger your spouse or cause them pain. This in turn creates more obstacles to resolving the many other conflicts of a divorce. Furthermore, some courts have went so far as to place restrictions on the dating spouse that likely would not have been created had the individual not rushed into a relationship.

3. Do Not Forget to Choose Your Words Carefully

During this time you will feel many negative emotions. Giving in to them will create more obstacles to resolving your divorce issues and breakdown needed communication between you and your spouse.

4. Do Not Vent on Social Media

Similarly to choosing your words carefully, do not let your emotions spill onto your social media. Your friends and family are watching, and your spouse may use what you post against you in court.

5. Do Not Neglect Your Finances

Divorce is expensive enough on its own. Work to avoid adding unnecessary debt, and budget your income and expenses. Spending the time to understand your finances and make wise spending decisions will pay off in the long run.

6. Do Not Forget to Take Care of Yourself

It’s ok and normal to feel pain during this time. The divorce process is often difficult and your life is changing. Take the time to do what you need to promote your own physical, emotional, and mental health. Consider joining a gym or speaking to a counselor. The stronger you are during this difficult time, the better off you will be in the long run.
